Zika virus continues to make headlines T he National Pest Management Association NPMA recently reported on the Zika virus which can be transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes among other methods U S Congressional movement On May 24 the U S House of Representatives passed the Zika Vector Control Act H R 897 which amends the Clean Water Act CWA to suspend the requirement to obtain National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System NPDES permits when applying pesticides directly to waters of the U S through September 2018 At press time lawmakers from the House and Senate were still negotiating a final funding level Mosquito certification alert Certification and training requirements for mosquito treatments vary from state to state In many states mosquito treatments are not included within the structural certification In some instances it may require certification in aquatic or public health depending on the use patterns The NPMA is strongly encouraging pest management professionals PMPs who intend to provide mosquito control services to ensure that they attain the proper certification in their state this summer State pesticide regulatory officials have indicated that receiving certification could take 30 days or more If you have questions concerning your current certification contact the NPMA or your lead state pesticide regulator In addition the U S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC Foundation recently asked Bayer for assistance on its Zika virus preparedness and response efforts In response Bayer committed to financial support product donation and assistance on education including Bayer was one of two major corporate sponsors of the U S Zika Action Plan Summit held on April 1 2016 at CDC headquarters in Atlanta The meeting was called for by the White House to formulate a coordinated U S government strategy and preparedness plan involving the states nongovernmental organizations NGOs and the private sector to prevent the spread of the Zika virus in the U S Bayer is donating more than 700000 units of its mosquito control product K OTAB for use in the CDC preparedness and response effort in Puerto Rico Bayer also is donating 10000 LifeNets insecticide treated netting that will help reduce bites from mosquitoes The product evaluated by the World Health Organization WHO is expected to protect those sleeping under it for up to three years 16 July 2016 Pest Management Professional mypmp net Photo CDC PUBLIC hEALth IMAGE LIBRARY PhIL JU AFN 4105 0 XJUI UIF BO ZPV 4105 UIJT FX POOFDUPS FX 4USJOH PMEFS Industry Intel
