news views believe it or not Raccoon costs high school wrestling team a championship According to the Daily Mail Reporter a North Dakota high school wrestling team picked up a raccoon on the way to a tournament final perhaps for good luck and it ended up having the opposite effect Thanks to the raccoon the North Dakota team was banned from bidding for its fourth consecutive championship after officials found out they had been in contact with the wild animal and feared they may have contracted rabies Members of the Carrington High School team believed the animal to be dead when they picked it up and put it in the storage area of their bus But when they arrived in Grafton where the tournament took place the raccoon was reported to have simply got up and trotted off Grafton Police Sgt Anthony Dumas told the Grand Forks Herald They thought it was dead so they picked it up Although no one was scratched or bitten by the animal the school officials decided to pull them from the team when learning of the incident Carrington school superintendent Brian Duchscherer said Once we found out we didnt know if there was a potential of spreading anything or if the raccoon had rabies or not but we decided to bring our kids home An anonymous caller was also said to have reported the incident to the authorities due to concerns about having a potentially rabid animal on a bus full of young people Police attempted to trace the raccoon to establish if it had rabies or not but have so far been unsuccessful in their search The school isnt sure how many of the wrestlers actually came into contact with the animal The decision to pull the team from the tournament denied them the opportunity to compete for a fourth consecutive Region 2 dual high school championship The team was scheduled to meet North Border Cavalier who instead won the competition by forfeit 18 March 2011 Pest Management Professional mypmp net
