Cover Story Lasting Legacy Frishmanidae Austin Doc Frishmans family of former pest management technology students organize a surprise gathering back at school and honor him with a Pi Chi Omega scholarship in his name Story and Photos by Marty Whitford Editor in Chief For almost a half century Austin Doc Frishman has pushed prodded and led budding entomologists and pest management professionals PMPs as well as key industry suppliers to the truth By his words and example hes taught thousands to live the dream to be the best they can be Few others have turned on so many to our field and helped mold more protectors of public health and true stewards of the environment Thats why a few dozen of his former pest management technology students at the State University of New York SUNY Farmingdale went back to school July 21 The thought of reuniting at the place where their careers began to break bread with their industry mentor was too good to pass up even during peak season in a down economy Thats also why it was OK strike that revise to why it was downright touching for grown professionals to hug passionately and shed a few tears when sharing with voices cracking just how much their beloved teacher means to them and the pest management industry The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth Dan Rather Most important thats why his former students recently worked closely with Pi Chi Omega an international pest management association to establish an Austin M Frishman endowed scholarship They want Doc Frishmans legacy to continue for centuries for the pest management industry to continue to attract retain and develop some of the brightest most prepared and dedicated minds in the world continued on page 30 Many of Austin Doc Frishmans former students Frishmanidae returned to their school to celebrate his legacy 26 PEST MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL SEPTEMBER 2010 www mypmp net
