tools of the trade Figure 3 Continued from page 93 the can through the nozzle and into the air or onto a surface Modern pressurized aerosols for the professional pest management industry are highly specialized for particular uses Only a professional can choose the correct ones for servicing different parts of an account The types of products include the following Total release aerosols are ideal for flying insect control and killing exposed stages of crawling pests Figure 3 Theyre excellent tools for treating rooms even as large as 5000 square feet Total release aerosols are activated by depressing the nozzle on the top of the can setting the can in the middle of the room and leaving the room They treat the space with tiny insecticide droplets that fall from the air The droplets dont penetrate well into cracks and crevices however using a fan to circulate the air can enhance movement of these droplets into cracks Pyrethrins and pyrethoids are the most common products used in total release aerosols because they flush out and knock down flying and crawling insects quickly For cockroach and fleas an insect growth regulator IGR should be added to provide residual control Surface spray aerosols are effective tools for quick control of crawling and flying insects when they contact treated surfaces Figure 4 The products are used by pointing the nozzle and dispensing a coarse insecticide spray that moistens the surface which can be a cabinet under a sink or the area behind and under a refrigerator Other ideal locations include surfaces in pantries and food storage areas of restaurants hotels hospitals and supermarkets These products are good weapons on surfaces where cockroaches ants stored product pests and silverfish forage for food and water Discovery Retreat TM Learn to Earn by Sharing Information 94 September 2011 Pest Management Professional mypmp net
