news views Hall of Famers Please join us in saluting this years inductees By Marty Whitford Editor in Chief A mazingly 15 years after our first Hall of Fame class was inducted in 1997 the caliber of industry icons being inducted those who truly have gone above and beyond to advance the pest management industry as a whole is as strong as ever Please join us in saluting our pmp Hall of Fame Class of 2011 including William E Blasingame Sr Appointed director of the Georgia Department of Entomology at the ripe old age of 31 Blasingame went on to serve as president of the National Pest Control Association now the National Pest Management Association as well as the Georgia Entomological Society and Pi Chi Omega an international industry fraternity Blasingame also served as the first chairman of the Georgia Structural Pest Control Commission Blasingame has mentored so many throughout his 60 year pest management career that Monroe Ga based Baccus Exterminators recently honored him with the dedication of its W E Blasingame Sr Pest Control Training Center Blasingame received a record number of nominations for induction Some of the biggest names in the business recalled the many ways Blasingame serving in myriad capacities including regulatory official industry member consultant and teacher has forever changed them and the pest management industry for the better Julius C Ehrlich posthumous Julius C Ehrlich was an adventurer a visionary and a man of integrity and honor In the 1920s Ehrlich landed a job as a salesman of sprayers and insecticides no salary or benefits commission only One day when calling on one of his biggest accounts Ehrlich discovered they had not used any of the last order of the insecticide Legend has it the custodian was either sick or had been fired Two things were certain The department store had no need for new product and Ehrlich needed to earn a living for his wife and daughters So Ehrlich offered to apply the insecticide sitting in inventory for the customer This was a win win win The customer was delighted and Ehrlich earned a commission Most important for the industry Ehrlich decided to provide the service of application as a business rather than just sell the product Thus the J C Ehrlich Exterminating Co was born in Reading Pa in 1928 Julius was 56 years old J C Ehrlich was the only pest control company in town at the time From his first service Ehrlich passed on three principles that ultimately would transform his company into the largest privately owned pest management business in North America 1 Initiative Ehrlich was determined to get the job done regardless of the obstacles he was facing he couldnt sell the product because there seemed to be no need 2 Creativity He hatched the idea to use the existing insecticide so he could complete the sale Continued on page 16 14 September 2011 Pest Management Professional mypmp net
