Start Up DiarieS By Pete SchoPen Contributor illustrations istock com chokkicx boygovideo now hiring the best employee ever A s youve read in my three previous columns weve taken the leap Schopen Pest Solutions finally bought a building Now its time for me to take my biggest leap yet What color to paint the conference room Nope Tinted glass versus privacy glass for my office Nuh uh Bumper pool or foosball in the break room Intriguing but no My next important decision is hiring a manager After 115 years of micromanaging every aspect of my business I know that I have to relinquish some of my duties Otherwise Im going to start losing clients As we approach 2 million in sales one person cant manage everything Ive got too many fishing poles in the water and I cant provide clients with the great customer service our company is known to offer I dont want my techs to feel left out either They are incredibly important and they need a boss who can manage them full time not part time But Schopen Pest Solutions is my baby How do I let someone else take the day to day operations away from me Within the past three years I have given the billing to my wife Tami and the programming to Laura A big chunk of the sales is now going through Phil That still leaves me plenty to do new customer sales technician accountability problem clients payroll postcards my PMP column chemical inventory equipment purchases truck maintenance human resources pest inspections etc My two biggest needs are human resources and a service manager Im leaning toward hiring a service manager first so I can help set up an HR department But who is this rock star that Im going to hire The person is going to need to be perfect Hell need Dr Austin Frishmans brains and The Rocks body sorry Doc but Dwayne Johnson has you beat in that department She would have to be part saleswoman and part technician The person I have in mind to manage my employees would need to be the love child of Mrs Doubtfire and Albert Einstein Actually never mind thats a little creepy Here is Pete Schopens perfect manager If you fit my criteria please shoot me an email Negotiating skills Winston Churchill Continued on Page 110 108 September 2017 Pest Management Professional mypmp net
